well... you know what my dad used to say when I was afraid of a bug or a mouse or something? First he'd ask "Is it bigger than you?" And then he'd say, "you know, it's more scared of you than you are of it."
Small comfort, I know. But it may be true. Be careful about bringing a landlord into the picture. They're more likely to err on the side of d-con or snap traps. Could you get a have-a-heart and catch it yourself, and then take it to the country somewhere. Or at least down the block?
We had a mouse last winter. We called our landlord. He brought us glue traps. That seemed beastly. But M-N needed it out, and especially with a baby, so we got a snap trap, which seemed cruel, too, but it worked. It's gone now.
I'd rather get a humane trap, but unless you're planning to have mice constantly, they're kind of expensive.
And we did spare it from being toyed with by the cat.
